White Sands, New Mexico: How the World’s Largest Gypsum Dune Field Formed

White Sands National Park in New Mexico looks like a vast desert covered in snow, but its brilliant white dunes are made of gypsum.

Covering about 275 square miles of the ...Tularosa Basin, White Sands is the largest gypsum dune field in the world.

Its story began around 280 million years ago, when an ancient Permian sea deposited thick layers of gypsum across the region. Much later, rain and snowmelt dissolved gypsum from the surrounding mountains and carried it into the closed Tularosa Basin.

During the last Ice Age, much of the basin was occupied by ancient Lake Otero. As the climate became warmer and drier, the lake receded and gypsum crystallized as selenite. Weathering, water, freezing and thawing, and wind gradually broke these crystals into sand-sized grains.

Today, wind continues to move and reshape the dunes, while gypsum crystals continue to form around Lake Lucero and Alkali Flat.

Waitomo Glowworm Caves in New Zealand are famous for a ceiling illuminated by thousands of tiny blue lights.

But what makes Waitomo extraordinary is not only the glowworms.

The story began around ...30 million years ago, when marine sediments accumulated beneath a shallow sea and eventually became limestone. Over millions of years, slightly acidic groundwater dissolved the limestone and created the caves, underground passages, and karst landscape seen today.

Inside the darkness lives Arachnocampa luminosa, New Zealand’s famous glowworm. These animals are actually the larvae of fungus gnats. They produce bioluminescent light to attract insects, which are captured using sticky silk threads hanging from the cave ceiling.

In this video, discover how the Waitomo Glowworm Caves formed, how stalactites and stalagmites develop, why glowworms produce light, and how geology and biology created one of New Zealand’s most remarkable natural wonders.
